A modest scale The Queensland Endangered Loggerhead Turtle Conservation Building won top prize at the 2020 Queensland Architecture Awards.

Mon Repos Turtle Center by Kirk received the Queensland Architecture Medallion as well as the FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture and the Harry Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture.

The project is located in the Bundaberg region on the central Queensland coast, on the site of Australia’s largest turtle nesting site.

“This unique condition has inspired a project that explores structural, enduring and expressive strategies to produce a Queensland building on a modest but meaningful scale,” said the jury.

“The building develops parallel strategies that minimize the effect on turtle nesting and migration, prioritizes a building system that minimizes waste and disturbance on the site, a building skin that minimizes the consumption of energy and materials that focus on the lifespan of the building.

“The overall effect is that of a building in harmony with the site. “

The Australian Institute of Architects announced the winners of the Queensland Architecture Awards 2020 during a live broadcast on July 9.

The winners of the nominated awards and prizes will move on to the National Architecture Awards to be announced in November.
