Jury quote

The rewards of heritage seem to praise historic absolutism or to accept fragments of heritage as a simple backdrop to contemporary commercial demands for redevelopment. Showing none of these trends, the Premier Mill Hotel is refreshing and revealing in its deep integration of a plethora of heritage artefacts and spatial remains, textures, materials and imagery that don’t simply invoke a past. but celebrate its ingenuity and authenticity. It is a project that shows sincere and respectful care without being museum-like or overtly deferential. It celebrates the past by making it visible, relevant and part of the hotel’s business appeal.

The building is indeed a spatial and material superposition. A sophisticated and well-designed boutique hotel has been incorporated into the fabric, massing and residual hardware and mechanics of a redundant flour mill. It was not a removal of the old one and a re-presentation of various pieces of the mill in a new context; rather, it was a delicate merger of a significant part of the original plant’s systems, mechanisms and engineering. Simultaneously, he also provided bespoke details and hospitality features that give the hotel a one-of-a-kind confluence – a contemporary heritage.

Educated to resuscitate and transform an important remnant of Katanning’s agricultural / industrial past, and to position it as a hotel that celebrates and advances tourism to the Great South region of Western Australia, Spaceagency Architects has redefined the meaning of a heritage project. The historic equipment (machines, belts, cables, shafts and conveyors) of the flour mill remains in situ, with the hotel rooms, corridors, circulation areas and stairs inserted into the carcass of the mill so as to preserve a appreciation of the architecture of the building. initial goal. It is a masterful achievement, born of intelligence and attention.

Premier Mill Hotel is located in Katanning, Western Australia, and built on the lands of the Wagyl Kaip and Southern Nyoongar peoples.
